He Can Hear Clearly Now The Guck Is Gone...

A while ago I posted that through a series of events we discovered that Ben's ears have been filled with fluid for probably the last two years of his 3-year-old life. I always knew his speech wasn't what it should be. His doctor said he has probably been hearing as if he is under water so he speaks as well as he hears.

I am happy to report that after a lot of antibiotics and now daily allergy medicine, Ben's ear canals are completely clear and he passed a hearing test with flying colors! I have already begun to notice a difference in his language skills, but I have been concerned that he heard things wrong for so long that he would need some speech therapy.

He was seen by a speech therapist this week at which time he was declared "Super Smart" (I would have said super dooper smart but I'm a little biased.) and in no need of professional help at all - just a lot of one on one talking time with mom and dad - which we can do. The therapist said he talks like a deaf child but there is no cognitive reason behind his garbled speech, he just simply could not hear clearly for the past 2 years.

So, now we begin at-home speech therapy. Hmmmm...I wonder how well Ben could say, "The rains in Spain stay mainly in the plains" with a mouth full of marbles? (just kidding - well maybe. wink, wink)

  1. Yay! Wonderful news! Has he said he can tell a difference? Does he perk up to sounds he probably couldn't hear before?

  2. Hooray for Ben! I'm so glad you figured this out when you did! I can't imagine the world of difference this had made for him. It would be so interesting to watch how he perceives the world now that he can hear properly!!

  4. Linsey and Hillary, sounds are often too loud for him which has never been the case and the joy on his face when we can repeat back to him what he said is unbelievable. He is thrilled to finally be understood.
