AHHHHHH!!!

This post is long over due but I need to write my experience...

A couple of weeks ago, Lizzy came home from school very quiet, not wanting to talk and acting very shy. I tried to figure out what was going on. Out of nowhere she blurted out, "I don't have a boyfriend!" What? Where did that come from. I could tell she wanted to talk about something but she was too shy so I finally said something about how cute she is and I bet there are lots of boys who think she is cute too. (What I wanted to say was, "Good!" but I'm learning I have to word things differently if I want Lizzy to open up to me.)

Then the truth came out...she got the biggest smile on her face and very shyly said, "Eddie likes me a lot mom." (Eddie sits next to her in class.)

Me: "Oh, how do you know? Did he tell you?" (the whole time acting all happy and not a single bit concerned)
Lizzy: "He held my hand today."
Me: "When? At recess?" (with a smile on my face)
Lizzy: "No, he reached over and held my hand under our desks during class today."
Me: silently freaking out "How did that make you feel inside?"
Lizzy: "All sparkley. We're going to have 5 kids someday and we already know their names."

Yes, you read that correctly. What was I to do?! Do I put my foot down and say, "You will stop this behavior immediately!" or do I see it for the innocent, sweet little kindergarten romance it is and not worry?! Tell me! I'm new to this!

Well, it went on for a couple of days...Lizzy bringing home drawings of she and Eddie getting married and coming home from the hospital with two babies - twins, a boy and a girl named Isabella and Marcus (?!). She and Eddie would spend recess together planning their future together! (I'm freaking out just writing this!)

But I let Lizzy talk and I smiled and, yes, I did talk about our standards but mostly I looked at this 6-year-old girl and loved her and remembered a little boy named Travis Bitton who used to bring me dandelions in a cup of water each morning in kindergarten and he would color pages of love notes to me about our future wedding and children. I still remember it like it was yesterday - probably my most vivid memory of kindergarten actually. Is my name Lisa Bitton? No. I didn't marry the guy. We ended up being good friends for several years after that. I was okay.

I finally talked to Lizzy's teacher who, of course, had no idea. (What, is she going to go around checking under desks to see who is holding hands?) The next day she moved Lizzy away from Eddie. (I felt kind of guilty). Lizzy was fine with the arrangement and was happy to make some new friends.

Two days later, I hadn't heard anything about Eddie so I inquired as to the status of their relationship (I can't stand that I just wrote "relationship" in reference to my 6-year-old!) She said,

Lizzy: "Oh, him. I guess he just wants the girl next to him to be his girlfriend because now Kayla sits next to him and she told me that she is Eddie's new girlfriend."
Me: (actually feeling kind of sad for her) "I'm sorry. How do you feel about that?"
Lizzy: "I was getting tired of being his girlfriend. I don't want a boyfriend, it's too weird and besides, I'm not old enough."

Well, I guess that took care of that.

Until the next time...

  1. Lol! Love that story! I love how she came to the conclusion herself that having a boyfriend gets old and she is too young! It will be interesting to see how she feels about this subject in 10 years!

  3. This little girl is hilarious and so mature for her age. It sounds like you did a great job at "not freaking out".
