First off...I need to apologize to all of those moms out there with school aged children who were not able to attend yesterday. It was a complete oversight on my part to start today and there is more to the story but, oh well. I hope you all had fun with your kiddos.
Today's talk was "Finding Joy in the Journey" by President Thomas S. Monson.
We started out by reading his first paragraph which states, "I ask for your faith and prayers in my behalf as I speak about those things which have been on my mind and which I have felt impressed to share with you."
I wanted to point out, first of all, that he has had this issue on his mind and has felt impressed to share it with us. Of all of the many, many topics the Lord could have asked him to speak about, He wanted the prophet to tell us all to learn how to deal with change and find joy in our lives. I thought that was very interesting because his message is for the whole world so there must be a lot of us out there who need this little reminder.
This talk is awesome and full of great "one-liners" as I like to call them. My sister owns a vinyl lettering business and there are several quotes from this talk that I want somewhere in my house. Here are a few good quotes...
Day by day, minute by minute, second by second we went from where we were to where we are now. The lives of all of us, of course, go through similar alterations and changes. Time never stands still, it must steadily march on, and with the marching come the changes.
This is our one and only chance at mortal life - here and now. I plead with you not to let those most important things pass you by as you plan for that illusive and non-existence future...
"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you've collected a lot of empty yesterdays." (The Music Man)
He related a short story of a father who turned down a business opportunity to go to the circus with his sons. "Mother smiled. 'The circus keeps coming back, you know,' [she said] 'I know,' said Father. 'But childhood doesn't.'"
If you are still in the process of raising children, be aware that the tiny fingerprints that show up on almost every newly cleaned surface, the toys scattered about the house, the piles and piles of laundry to be tackled will disappear all to soon and that you will - to your surprise - miss them profoundly.
Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved. (this will go in my house somewhere!)
"The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone." Harriet Beecher Stowe
"Do...human beings ever realize life while they live it - every, every minute?" (Our Town)
"Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head." "No room in the inn" was not a singular expression of rejection - just the first. (think about that one for a minute) Yet He invites you and me to receive Him.
...my sincere prayer is that we may adapt to the changes in our lives, that we may realize what is most important, that we may express our gratitude always and thus find joy in the journey.
This is a talk that needs to be reviewed often as it is very easy for us mortals to lose our eternal perspective. He admonished us to "Send that note to a friend you've been neglecting; give your child a hug; give yoru parents a hug; say 'I love you' more; always express your thanks."
Great advice and counsel from a man who doesn't just talk the talk but he definitely walks the walk.
