A couple of nights ago Lizzy was acting very strange. She was uncharacteristically quiet (that girl talks a mile a minute about everything under the sun). Finally she looked at me, with tears in her eyes and she said,
Lizzy:"Mommy, I said stinky words today and I feel so sad in my heart!"
Me: "What stinky words did you say?"
Lizzy:"Just stinky words and now I am so angry at myself."
Me: (In my thoughts)"How old is this girl?"
Lizzy: "I'm just so sad in my heart mommy, and I don't know what to do. I don't ever want to say stinky words again because it makes me feel so angry and so sad."
So, I sat down with this sweet girl who has been put in my charge and taught her about repentance - on the 4-year-old level of course, although she could probably handle a deeper version. When we were finished I asked her how she felt.
Lizzy: "I need to talk to Heavenly Father."
Me: "Do you want to talk to Him alone or do you want me there with you?"
Lizzy: "I need you with me mommy."
So Lizzy said her sweet prayer, shedding tears of remorse the whole time. When we were finished she gave me a hug and let me hold her for a long time. Finally, I asked if she was ok.
Lizzy: "Yes, I asked Heavenly Father to help me not do it again and He will. Can we watch movie now and pop popcorn?"
It was over, she was done and ready to move on. She has mentioned it a couple of times since but only to remind me that Heavenly Father is helping her.
I have said it before and I will say it again, it is an absolute honor to be this girl's earthly mother. I am very aware of whose daughter she really is and I know she is here to teach me just as much as I am to teach her.
That is definitely a special little spirit you have there. What a sweet moment for you!!
ReplyDeleteThis was a definate lesson for me. If a small child like Lizzy can feel bad about things and repent then so can we all.So why is it so hard for us as adults to repent...idk the answer but Lizzy definately taught me somethig today. She is an example to me and she is only 4 but I think that children are the greatest examples at times like this. She is a special little on and you are blessed greatly because of her. Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet story!
