Student of The Week

Lizzy is the Student of the Week this week at school. Her teacher has been sending home absolutely glowing reports from the very beginning but she was finally chosen as the special student this week. Each week that she wasn't picked I tried to get a feel for her reaction. She seemed fine so I didn't worry about it. I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it, besides Lizzy can't be the only amazing student in the class. I guess there must be a couple more! :) (I would have picked her as Student of the Week every single week so it is a good thing I'm not in charge!)

This week, as we were celebrating her achievement, she admitted that she has been "hoping and hoping and hoping" to be picked "and I just kept being gooder and gooder and gooder Mommy so that I could be picked." (We'll work on that grammar.)

Then, true to Lizzy fashion she starts in on her deep thoughts, "Mommy I just know when we hope and hope and hope for something it will happen because that is what happened to me."

How do I tell her so she'll understand, that hope doesn't always bring you what you want? Or is she right? Am I the one who needs to learn from her? It is probably a combination of both. I guess if we can finally get to a point when we only hope for what our Father hopes for us, then, yes, our hopes will be fulfilled.

But, remember this? The Contest She told me, after we talked about hope, that she is still "hoping and hoping and hoping" to win this contest! I was hoping and hoping and hoping she had forgotten about this contest.

What an interesting experience parenthood is. Watching your child learn the lessons you have had to learn over and over and you wish you could spare them heartache and disappointment but you know that would not be in their best interest. How must our Father feel when we continually ask for what He knows is not in our best interest?

Anyway...I've moved off of Lizzy being Student of the Week...we are so proud of her. She is such a wonderful, smart, sweet and incredibly normal little girl who complains and whines and has a messy room but is still wonderful and smart and sweet and we LOVE being her parents. It is a complete HONOR!!

  1. There is a very fine line to walk on that "hoping" thing. Have I ever found it? I'm not sure! You want to let a child have her faith, and yet realize that things don't always come quite that easily. Hard to do!

Well, congrats to Lizzy for being Student of the Week!
