On Labor Day of this year, we had two new additions to our family...a big 10-year-old desert tortoise and a baby tortoise. Ben fell in love with the big guy and immediately started calling him "Big Buddy". Lizzy claimed the baby one and named her "Little Sarah" (although we won't know if it is a boy or girl for years yet.)
Ben has wanted to take Big Buddy for show and tell at preschool for a while so one day I finally worked it all out with his teacher so Ben could show off his big friend.
Ben's classmates were immediately enthralled. Big Buddy is not a shy tortoise. I think he imagines himself to be a dog - if you want to know my opinion. :) He was curious and started exploring the minute his four funny looking feet touched the ground.
Ben is telling his friends all about what Big Buddy eats and how he tries really hard to get to our swimming pool but we have it completely blocked off so he's safe.
Just looking at Ben's face in this picture tells me that this was ONE of the times he corrected his teacher and I from calling Big Buddy a turtle. He is shaking his finger and saying "He is a tortoise! Not a turtle!"
Big Buddy was quite popular and Ben was very proud. Maybe Big Buddy can visit the class again.
